I was on the highway with cruise control set at 65. I hit 44MPG on a flat part of the highway. Today with varying RPMs and speed, and 180 miles, I averaged 26MPG. But I was hitting some higher RPMs today than I normally do. Most of that average comes from stop and go driving on local roads.

Just "getting" (as in, briefly getting up to) 40mpg isn't going to mean much. My Durango got up to 15mpg on a flat stretch, even when towing my boat. The real way to figure MPG is to record the miles at every fill-up and the amount of gas you dump in the tank.

    .....
    ODOMETER -- FUEL
    1000 miles - 8.3 gallons.
    1300 miles = 9.2 gallons.
    1300 minus 1000 = 300. Divide by 9.2, and you get 32.6 mpg.

To make it even more accurate, you can add up three or four fill-ups, and subract the range. I track MPG in a spreadsheet for all my project cars using a 3 and 10 fill-up range. It's a good way of tracking the effects of various mods.

Maybe on a highway, at 15 MPH, you might get 40 MPG..............I get anywhere from 26 city to 34 Hwy........Not as good as I thought it would be, but way better than my 16 MPG Jeep Liberty..................SO I AM STILL SMILING!! : )...................Still "lovin" my Dart!!! Wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING!!!

I'm on a trip from NY to VA and I got 38 mpg and that's going through towns and up and down hills (down US 15 through PA). Then I went from VA to PA (Philly area) and got 39 mpg...all highway (65-72 mph). I'm very satisfied! If you're puttering around town you won't get anywhere near the 39 mpg. Once you go on a longer trip you'll start to see those results. Oh, btw I'm using 93 octane because I can't get 91 where I live.
